Accountant or Tax Specialist: Which One Does Your Small Business Need?
Most incorporated small businesses need both. A business tax accountant handles your tax accounting: preparing your corporation's financial statements and filing its tax returns. A tax specialist analyzes your situation to legally reduce your tax burden, from owner compensation to planning ahead of a transaction. The accountant keeps your numbers compliant, and the tax specialist makes sure you don't pay more tax than you need to.
Whether you run a tech startup or a content business, your Toronto business has the same core tax obligations: an annual T2 return and tax instalments. Miss either one, and penalties and interest follow.
The difference between compliance and planning shows up in your tax rate. Since July 1, 2026, the Ontario small business tax rate is 2.2%. With the federal 9%, that brings the combined rate to 11.2% on the first $500,000 of active business income of an eligible Canadian-controlled private corporation. Income above that limit, or income that no longer qualifies for the small business deduction, is taxed at 26.5%. On $500,000, that difference is about $76,500.

Tax Questions From Toronto Small Business Owners
How do I file a corporate tax return in Toronto?
Send us your year-end financial statements, or the accounting records we need to prepare them, through our secure portal. We prepare your T2 return with every schedule, a CPA tax specialist reviews it, and we file it electronically with the CRA.
What are the deadlines for filing corporate taxes in Toronto?
You file your T2 within six months of your fiscal year-end and pay any balance sooner: within two months, or three for eligible small corporations. For a December 31 year-end, that means paying by the end of February (March 31 if you're eligible) and filing by June 30. Late filing brings penalties, and unpaid balances accrue interest. Our secure portal and annual follow-up remind you ahead of each deadline.
What tax rate applies if my fiscal year straddles July 1, 2026?
A blended rate. Ontario's small business income tax rate fell from 3.2% to 2.2% on July 1, 2026, so your year is split by days. For a December 31 year-end, the Ontario rate averages about 2.7%, or about 11.7% combined.
Do I have to file a T2 if my corporation is inactive?
Yes. Every corporation files a T2 return each year, even with no income or activity. We file your nil return at a lower cost, so you stay compliant with the CRA.
Does my Ontario corporation need to file a Quebec CO-17?
Only if it has a permanent establishment in Quebec, such as an office or a warehouse. In that case, you file a CO-17 with Revenu Québec in addition to your T2, within the same six-month deadline. We prepare both returns and file them with the two tax authorities.
